Genesis 9:8-13:
"And G-d spoke to Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you; and with every living creature that is with you, of the birds, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you... Neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. And G-d said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth...."
A covenant is an agreement. Then what is our responsibility in the covenant, which we are supposed to honor for perpetual generations?
G-d gave Noah and all his descendants (B'nei Noach or "children of Noah") seven commandments that we are to obey, symbolized by the seven colors of the rainbow. These Seven Noahide Laws were reaffirmed with Moses and the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai, so that modern observance of these laws is done according to the specifics given in the Oral Torah (the revelation at Sinai). These Seven Commandments (mitzvos) are not arbitrary laws, but rather G-d's plan for mankind. Adherence to this moral code guarantees harmony among ourselves, with the rest of Creation, and with G-d. (The Seven Universal Laws of Noah have only been replaced for the Jewish people, to whom G-d gave the entire Torah [teaching] as their Law. They therefore have a special responsibility--with special commandments--to be the priesthood of the world, a "light unto the nations.")
Non-Jews who (1) reject all idolatrous ideas
and accept the kingship of the One G-d, (2) accept the priesthood of the Jewish people as the guardians and teachers of Torah, and (3) commit to following the Seven Universal Laws as reaffirmed in the Oral Torah revealed at Mt. Sinai are often called "Noahides" or "Hasidic Gentiles." The term "Hasidic Gentile" is derived from a classic commentary by the Rambam, Rav Moshe ben Maimon (Maimonides), in The Laws of Kings 8:11: "Anyone who accepts upon himself the fulfillment of these Seven Mitzvos [commandments] and is precise in their observance is considered one of the chassidei umos ha'olam ["Hasidim of the nations of the world"]--the righteous among the nations--and will merit a share in the World to Come."Noah's Covenant is the Web site of Jews and Hasidic Gentiles—United to Save America, a national Jewish and Hasidic Gentile outreach organization headquartered in southern California. We follow the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbeim with our programs and activities, helping to create a worldwide Hasidic Gentile movement that will bring the Messiah in this generation. In addition to maintaining this Web site, we pursue a variety of activities to educate people around the world about the Seven Universal Laws, the proper relationship of non-Jews with G-d and with the Jewish people, and the urgent need for Torah-centered outreach to non-Jews.
